Healing the Feminine Divine with Sacred Womb Work

If you’ve ever connected with your sacral centre and womb in yoga or meditation, or just because you felt the urge to lay your hands below your navel, you’ll probably be aware, or at least have a sneaking suspicion of the vast power and energy cradled deep within this creative and intuitive part of us.
Even if the womb has been surgically removed, it is still very much present energetically. If you have never connected but are curious, read on for suggestions for beginning womb work.

What is sacred womb work?
Most of us have heard the phrase "gut instinct."
This applies not only to the intestinal tract, or the second brain as it’s sometimes known, but to the entire pelvic area, especially the womb. The collective awakening of the womb might be just the medicine this world needs most right now. Just as we all have a genetic connection to our birth mother; we all have a Divine connection to the Great Mother/Goddess.
Energetic blockages in the womb disrupt this connection and disconnect us from the sacredness of our own wombs. Many of us have suffered painful life events leading us to shut down, stuff down, and withdraw within our womb centres.
The call of the womb is the call of the wild soul we have for too long been disconnected from, the sacred feminine, devalued, and stripped from our lives and our consciousness.
Many of us carry trauma and store old hurt in our wombs. We push an extraordinary amount of stuff deep down there, all the sadness of ended love affairs, grief, rage, and shame, the multiple injuries, and legacies of abuse, and rape.
Many of us have been implicitly conditioned to believe our sexuality is shameful, that if we’re turned on there’s something wrong with us. It takes an extraordinary amount of energy to push down and stifle all that embarrassing sexual charge, which in reality, is pure, undiluted life force energy, our joie de vivre, and a deep, sensuous well of creativity.
A lot of this pushing down we do unconsciously. All the stuff we don’t want, we reject. All we can’t bear to feel is pushed down, deep, deep into the womb. She herself is ignored now, rejected, because for many of us, it’s just too painful to go there. Ignoring the womb disconnects us from our deep soul roots and wild self, the sensuous Earth and her divine feminine energy, from the lifeforce and from love, as this lifeforce is the purest love there is, direct from Source, and we effectively cut ourselves off from Source, disconnect from our potential to create new life and manifest, and we are left far more likely to give birth only to suffering. Numb and disconnected, we are unable to rely on our own intuition.
Our sixth sense blinded, we are unable to read red flags and so are open to yet more abuse, if that has been our story so far. It hampers our creativity and our joy.
The wise woman knows that Womb work cannot be rushed. We must work gently, softly, slowly, with the greatest self-love and respect, learn to be still and listen deep.
Here, a journal is useful, to jot down any insights arising. It is very rewarding work as it reconnects us with a deeply held knowing of who we are and what we are part of, our place within the web of life and earth's ecosystem. We come to know that the womb is more than just an organ within a body. It is a sacred cauldron bubbling with creative potential, an energetic portal, a bridge between the worlds. And once we have a strong connection re-established, we can journey with ease any time we choose.
Womb work is shamanic and energetic work in that it develops our capacity to vision and dream, to “see in the dark” and intuit. It is also practical healing work, because often our wombs will try to communicate with us, grumble or even scream at us, by developing symptoms such as fibroids or endometriosis, flooding or irregular menstrual bleeding, unspecified pain and discomfort, to name but a few.
On every level, it’s important we heal our wombs.
Self-care womb rituals
Here are some simple rituals to do at home whenever you have some time for self-care.
Feel free to pick the one which resonates most or develop your own rituals from them.
Light a candle and set the intent that this is sacred time, special time, the time for self-care and nurture and have a journal and pen close by.
Epsom salt womb wash
Soak in a bath of Epsom salt and lavender. Place your hand over your womb space and relax, allowing the breath to soften and extend. Just stay still and relaxed in this position for up to twenty minutes.
There is no need to do anything apart from becoming aware of your womb and noticing anything which arises, any sensation, pains or feelings associated with that area. It may not be negative. There may be joy and energy. Just notice and accept without judgment.
Without stepping out of the bath pull the plug, and intend any unpleasant sensation or emotion associated with the womb be pulled away and drained away with the water.
Visualised them swirling down the plughole.
Step out of the bath when all the after is drained and record anything of interest in your journal.
Bringing down heaven into your womb.
This is a variation of a well-known Chi gong exercise.
For this ritual, go outside into the darkness.
Plant your feet firmly on the ground and gaze up at the moon and stars (don’t worry if you don’t see them).
Bring the hands to prayer position at your heart, then circle them skyward as you imagine the energy from the heavens coming through your hands.
You might pick a star or constellation and imagine plucking it from the sky, or else draw in the moon.
Bring the hands back down to the prayer position and then place them on your womb, letting the energy settle there.
Traditionally this exercise would be done for any body part the practitioner felt needed to soak in some sky energy.
Pelvic tender loving
Simply get into PJs make a cuppa and fill a hot water bottle. Pull a duvet around you and curl up on the sofa, cradling the hot water bottle at your sacrum.
Visualise the warmth as golden light permeating and healing your womb. Enjoy.
